In May of 1902, Anthony Comstock hauled Hugo Kestler into the Court of Special Sessions to face charges of having obscene pictures in his New York photograph gallery. The main witness was Bruno Kestler, the brother of the accused, who ratted out his brother to Comstock, leading to a raid of Hugo’s studio, Comstock’s discovery of the photos and Hugo’s arrest. However, all three justices of the court agreed that the evidence showed the photographs were planted by Bruno, and promptly set Hugo free. Afterwards, Comstock said that he would probably have to swear out a complaint against Bruno.
