In May of 1901, Anthony Comstock raided the White Plains, N.Y., hotel of Leopold S. Kahn, arresting him and confiscating a nickel-in-the-slot machine. Kahn was better known as Admiral Dot. After a career performing for P.T. Barnum and with his own troupe, Kahn retired to White Plains and opened a hotel.
Also arrested was E.H. Sniffin, whose nearby billiard hall yielded three slot machines. After pleading guilty, each man paid a $10 fine, and the four slot machines were destroyed.
New York’s Evening Telegram opined, “Having eradicated all the vice in New York, Anthony Comstock has raided a hotel kept by a dwarf in White Plains and captured a slot machine. A medal ought to be struck to commemorate this achievement.”
